Kakao Games announced on the 5th that it has obtained an AAA rating, two steps higher than the previous evaluation, in the ESG evaluation conducted by MSCI, a global ESG assessment organization under Morgan Stanley Capital International.
In this evaluation, Kakao Games ranked in the top 2% of the global media & entertainment industry evaluations and received the highest AAA rating in the MSCI ESG evaluation for the first time since declaring ESG management in 2022. Kakao Games is the only company in the domestic gaming industry to achieve an AAA rating.
MSCI, a leading authority in the ESG evaluation field and the largest ESG fund benchmark provider globally, assesses environmental management, human resources development, governance, and other ESG-related core issues for over 8,500 listed companies worldwide every year since 1999, assigning ratings from CCC to AAA in 7 steps. Kakao Games scored highly in various areas such as carbon emissions, human resources development, information security, and governance in this evaluation.
Kakao Games is expanding its carbon emission reduction activities by obtaining international standard environmental management system certification and participating in the Kakao Group's Active Green Initiative. It has also strengthened its user information security management system by acquiring the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Cross-Border Privacy Rules (APEC CBPR) certification. In addition, Kakao Games is focusing on enhancing governance transparency by establishing the 'Compliance and Trust Committee' and strengthening internal compliance monitoring and control functions.
A Kakao Games official stated, "Since the first MSCI evaluation in 2022, we have continuously improved our rating by two steps each year and achieved the highest AAA rating in just 2 years, being the first in the related industry group. It is of great significance." The official also said, "We will continue to carry out ESG and CSR activities that only Kakao Games can do in all areas of environment, society, and governance to practice ESG management.".
Meanwhile, Kakao Games is consistently conducting various ESG activities such as providing game culture experiences using 'Kakao Friends' characters through 'Friends Game Land,' supporting auxiliary devices for improving accessibility for disabled gamers, conducting user and employee participation-based donation campaigns, and publishing ESG reports transparently containing ESG management strategies and performance, future plans, and sustainability management status information. Kakao Games has also received the highest evaluation among domestic game companies for two consecutive years in the major domestic ESG evaluation, the 'Korea ESG Standard Institute.'
